Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about new vs used containers

How long do used shipping containers last?

Used shipping containers typically last 15-25+ years with proper care. Containers originally designed for 10-12 years of ocean shipping are built to withstand extreme conditions. On land (without salt water exposure), they last significantly longer. Our used containers are inspected to ensure years of reliable use.

What's the difference between one-trip and used containers?

One-trip (new) containers have made only one voyage from the manufacturer, typically from China. They're in pristine condition with minimal wear. Used containers have been in active shipping service for years and show varying degrees of cosmetic wear, though they remain structurally sound and weatherproof.

Are used containers waterproof?

Yes, all containers we sell are certified wind and watertight (WWT). We inspect every used container to ensure door seals, roof, and walls are intact. If a container doesn't meet our watertight standard, we don't sell it. Your belongings will stay dry.

Can I paint or modify a used container?

Absolutely! Used containers are excellent candidates for painting and modification. Many customers paint them to match their property or business colors. You can also add windows, doors, ventilation, insulation, and electrical. Some modifications are actually easier on used containers since you're not concerned about preserving pristine condition.

Which container condition is best for my needs?

Choose new (one-trip) if appearance matters, you're using it commercially, or want maximum longevity. Choose used if you prioritize value, need basic storage, or plan to modify it anyway. For farm storage, construction sites, and backyard storage, used containers offer the best value.

Do you have containers in between new and heavily used?

Yes! We grade our used containers by condition. 'Cargo Worthy' containers are in better cosmetic condition with less denting and minimal rust. 'Wind & Water Tight' containers may show more wear but are fully functional. We'll help you find the right balance of condition and price.

How much money do I save buying used vs new?

Used containers typically cost 30-40% less than new containers. For a 20ft container, you might save $1,500-$2,000 by choosing used. The savings are even greater on 40ft containers. Since both new and used provide the same core function (secure, weatherproof storage), many customers prefer the value of used.

What should I look for when buying a used container?

Check for: 1) Watertight seals on doors, roof, and walls, 2) Functional door mechanisms that open/close smoothly, 3) Solid flooring without holes or major damage, 4) No severe rust-through (surface rust is normal). At C-Can Sam, we inspect all containers before sale so you don't have to worry.
